Heather had secured a new role as Head of Finance in a manufacturing company and within a few months recognised that she was facing three key challenges.
1. She had inherited a team with a diverse range of characters, one in particular was difficult to manage and this was impacting on Heather’s confidence in her ability as a manager.
2. Heather was struggling to move out of ‘the detail’, and to focus on the strategy for her department. Heather recognised that she was micromanaging her team, and didn’t feel able to delegate certain tasks.
3. Heather was shying away from offering her opinions and ideas in management team meetings
Using the Soft Skills for Strong Leaders structure in a one to one coaching programme, I helped Heather to uncover what kind of leader she wanted to be, determining her leadership values and recognising how she could lead a team while being true to herself. Heather’s confidence had been knocked and we worked to rebuild this, focusing on her strengths and achievements.
Using a personality profiling tool helped Heather to recognise her natural talents, and she started to become more aware of the different styles of her team, how best to utilise their skills, and how to communicate with them. This profiling tool also helped Heather to recognise what kind of person she needed to recruit when one of her team left the company.
We worked on Heather’s personal impact, how to handle difficult situations and how to build and manage her team more effectively. In just under four months, the results were visible and tangible.
“I now have a sense of purpose in what I am doing at work. I have a much better understanding of what a manager and leaders role is and what my teams should expect of and from me. The realisation that I can’t do all of the detail and the top-line was a significant one and that helping the teams to develop, manage their time and prioritise was a better use of resources to deliver the overall business objectives.
I feel more positive about what I contribute in a work environment, and with more self-confidence and belief am able to offer my opinion and challenge more.
The level of stress I was feeling has decreased for a number of reasons. Understanding how important it is that I am a positive, calm, decisive and a strong leader to both my and other teams has really made me consider how I conduct myself in the work environment.
I am delegating more effectively and hopefully starting to support my team in stepping up to allow me to focus more time on the longer term and strategic goals of the business. I am hoping by taking this approach I am increasing the motivation in the teams and therefore retention and am able to add value where the business needs”. Heather, Head of Finance
